Lynchburg Tutors Open Up About the Pros and Cons of Working for the Writing Center
Wilmar Writing Center Staff at the University of Lynchburg state that the flexible work schedule and the appointments with students are the best part of the job overall.
Graduate Tutor Brayden Glen said, “I enjoy working with other students and getting to integrate myself on campus since my program is not located directly on the UL campus.”
Although interactions with students tend to be great, the appointments themselves can be a problem when it comes to staff encountering assignment topics they are unfamiliar with. This can be quite discouraging for the tutors, especially when the lack of familiarity with an assignment topic can prevent them from giving proper aid to their clients.
With fellow Tutor Henry Gardiner having this to add, “[I] can leave an appointment sometimes feeling that [I] did not do much.”
Despite these hiccups, though, the writing center as a whole can be a great career opportunity on campus for students who either lack a car for travel or wish to pad their resume a bit.
Layla Apo advised job searching students that, “Doing the feedback bank was very helpful…being able to pull up resources on the fly without having to search through…stuff.”
Brayden furthermore stated, “For those who want to work in the writing center…appointments require…figur[ing] out…the root problem is and find appropriate resources. This requires good management of time…”
